Tough Times at WMT's Okauchee Event

For the third time in Wisconsin Muskie Tour™ (WMT) history, a one day tournament scored a shutout. The 2010 WMT Lake Okauchee "MUSKIE DOUBLE HEADER"™ qualifier on Sunday, May 16th, had no legal muskies registered for the event.

The Lake Okauchee tournament started out promising with 42 degree air temperature, partly cloudy, and a slight 6mph wind from the north east, but what is always the primary factor in a muskie tournament is the unpredictability of the muskies attitude! Even though most of the competing anglers saw muskies during the event, the muskies tended to just follow baits instead of attacking them. However, four teams reported having muskies on but to only lose them during the battle…in fact, one team explained how a mid-forty incher was a foot away from their net when it turned its body and shook its head to escape their grasp.

The WMT is the largest professional muskie circuit in the world that culminates with the most prestigious muskie tournament…the "WMT Invitational Championship"™. It is for this reason that the WMT has always adopted the policy that if the muskies at a particular event are willing biters or not, all five places will be paid out at a one day event and ten places will be paid at a two day "MAJOR OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP"™. Over the years, some teams have taken advantage of a " luck-of-the-draw" to springboard them to a very successful tournament fishing season and or career…we will watch to see if any of the Lake Okauchee winners take advantage of their opportunity.

The WMT’s Lake Okauchee “MUSKIE DOUBLE HEADER”™ winners were:

1st - Mark Gillich/Joey Rozanski
2nd - Chris & Dave Lorier
3rd - Chris Kakaltris/Jeff Anderson
4th - Kevin & Scott Abendroth
5th - George & Andy Kingsland

The next tournaments for the WMT are "MUSKIE DOUBLE HEADER"™ qualifiers on Lac Vieux Desert and North/South Twin Lakes on the weekend of May 29th and 31st. There are still some spots open for each tournament. If you would like to fish the Lac Vieux Desert (LVD) event, you can sign up for the tourney on Friday, May 28th at the Hillside Resort on the south shore of LVD off of South Shore Drive between 5:30pm and 7:30pm. Registration for North/South Twin Lakes will be at Grape's Twin Haven Resort on Saturday, May 30th between 6:00pm and 7:00pm.
